Project 5 → Anorak
Second year live brief project which was published in volume 68 of Anorak.
BRIEF
The Playground: write and bring to life a short illustrated story on the theme of playgrounds for a new issue of Anorak, the gender-neutral children’s magazine with a focus on sparking imagination.
CONCEPT
An illustrated story about a child who notices an old, abandoned playground that has fallen apart. Feeling sad for the playground, the child decides to enlist the help of their mum and friends to fix it. They embark on an adventure which sees the playground come to life, allowing it to make friends with them; this reflects the sense of wonder and possibillity that a playground presents to a child.
SOLUTION
A digitally collaged outcome, using analogue textures created with charcoal and fluorescent ink; this lent the illustration a feeling of play reminiscent of a child’s drawing. The vivid colour palette reflects Anorak’s energetic, curious nature. In keeping with the childlike, hand-made character of the illustration, I created a typeface based on my younger brother’s handwriting.
